As someone who lives in a hot, dry climate, I welcome Fall with open arms. Finally, beach and tourist season is over, and I'm not getting eaten alive by bugs.
Fall has many wonderful things going for it, yes, but October ... well, October is the best. If you're a lover of these cooler months, you're probably nodding your head in agreement, but in case you need a reminder, here are 8 reasons that October is the best month ever!
We're lucky enough to live in a region that produces pretty spectacular tree fruits.. and one of the biggest crops are apples. Most varieties are ready from late September through early November, making October prime apple season. Whether you plan on making an apple pie, or dehydrating apples to add to trail mix, October is the best month to do it in.
Although it never seems to last for very long, normally green surroundings turn vibrant with beautiful reds, oranges, and yellows, which gives time spent outdoors a fun and unique feeling. Even once the leaves start to fall, hiking through piles of these colorful, fallen leaves is sure to put a smile on most faces.
Yes, we mentioned apples already (they deserve their own spot), but with October comes all sorts of produce that we really only see at this time of year. Late September through early November harvests bring: Pears, Grapes, Squash, Pumpkin, Turnips, Sweet Potatoes, Ginger, and so many others!
If you are a sports fanatic, you can agree October is the best month in sports. Although technically the NFL and NHL seasons start in mid-to-late-September, both the World Series and Basketball get started in October. Weekends are often devoted to watching your favorite team, and of course, the best part of football season is tailgating.
Well, if you like scary stuff, you probably like Halloween for more than just the dressing up and the candy part (that's the part that I like). It's the perfect time of year, and usually the only time most of us will enjoy, Haunted houses, scary movies, and Halloween themed episodes of your favorite TV shows.
One of my favorite pastimes is searching for the perfect Pumpkin and carving it into something cool! Then of course, there are Pumpkin Spice Lattes (#PSL), Pumpkin pie, roasted Pumpkin seeds, Pumpkin beer .. the list goes on!
Pack up the bathing suits and shots, October is sweater weather! October is when you pack up all the summer gear and get ready for the cooler months ahead. Depending on where you are, that might mean breaking out long sleeves .. or winter jackets. For most of us, cooler temps often means layering our clothes. Its the time of year that I get my base layers, merino wool, gloves, hats, and Columbia Omni-Heat stuff out of the closet.
The crowds are gone.. and so are the bugs. October, especially if you live in a hot climate, means that you're finally able to get outside and enjoy the Great Outdoors. Hiking, camping, trail running, fishing, boating, biking, and countless other outdoor activities are much more easily enjoyed when the sun isn't beating down, and you're not fighting the tourists for space.
So no matter what reasons make you love October, go find the perfect Pumpkin (if you haven't already) and make the most out of the rest of the month!
